So we got the new 2010 just over a month ago and the first thing we thought we needed to do was to test the S%&t out of them out. So we put a set of the World Cups in the hands of our top rider, Canadian National champ, Drew Mitchell. I figured, if anyone can push them to failure, it's this guy. Most people avoid large boulders on the trails, he seeks out the gnarliest lines possible, just to see if it can be done!

Last month I received my new 2010 Boxxer from Dunbar and threw it straight onto the front of my Devinci Wilson 4! I decided I needed to test it out to see what all the hype was about, so me and Rob headed up to Seymour for a run on what I think is one of the gnarliest, roughest tracks on the shore, Neds! (when your fully pinned).

For those of you that don’t know much about Neds, this track is comparable to the World Cup track in Fort William Scotland in that there are loose boulders scattered over the trail with big compression holes that like to catch your wheels and throw you into the massive roots and rocks scattered through out the trail.

As we get to the top of the trail head, Rob looks over at me and takes off pinned! The first section has gnarly steps made of roots and rocks that you double up once you begin to pick your speed up, I instantly began to feel the buttery feeling in the fork. I was already blowing through the travel of the fork slamming it into massive loose rocks only to realize that I was still in total control of the bike. 20 seconds down the trail and I am blown away at what a different level these forks are on, compared to so many others that I have ridden. After about a minute down the trail I had to stop and tell Rob “This is F$%#ing ridiculous! I can’t feel a thing with these forks and they are tracking everywhere I want them to!” I took off again and began to feel an amazing amount of confidence in the fork, so I decided to test these bad boys out a little. I decided to double up this root section that I had done a couple of times before. I go for it and just as I’m in the air I think to myself UH OH! There, right where my front wheel needed to go was a loose boulder the size of my chest on the landing, pointing right at me. I was nose heavy into it already, the only thing I could do was lean back on the bike and hope for the best. Goosh! was all I remember and then of a sudden I went from "oh no!", to "That was awesome!" The fork soaked it up like it was just a little baby head! My ass was saved from annihilation by 8 inches of RockShox genius! And no, I'm not sponsored by SRAM, I'm saying that because they are amazing!
Since that first day, I have been relentlessly hammering these for over a month and have found NO weaknesses!

This fork really brings suspension forks to a whole new level of riding capabilities right out of the box. My rating on this fork on a level of crap to sick, it rates very Sick!

the bloke in the second vid said that the testing bloke said that they were the best forks he had ever ridden
not really, the new 888's are overpriced and just as demanding in terms as servicing as 40's and boxxers.
and if your buying top of the range forks your always guna have to look after them and service them.
The 09 888 ATA WC's are currently on sale on CRC for £840, but the RRP is £1100 so not exactly cheap - theyre trying to compete with Boxxers, though frankly i'd rather get the 2010 Teams for £900
Also the whole selling point of the older marzocchis, or at least what their reputation was built on, was the fact that they just lasted and lasted and rarely broke, but the 08 MZ's reliability has been utterly shocking, and they have cut the weight down a lot which most likely means that they just aren't built as burly as they used to be.

yeah so true rolto1822 nearly every mate of mine with 08 888 rc3's has had majour probs , it's surely gonna hit marzzochis sales from now on as people dont have the faith in them , i know im gonna be cautious on my forks when i get them back from repair warrenty claim.
Yeah one of my mates had problems with his 08 888 ATA's three weeks after he bought them new! It's ridiculous!
I agree that everything from MZ after 07 is a crap. I actualy believe that 2006 was the last fully successful year. And ATA sorry, why do U put travel adjusment into downhill fork... besides ATA cannot match previous ETA.
italians are the best ,up to 07 not the same , the 07 888 rc2x its really a good fork I think one of the best forks I try
I had 2006 rc2x, changed to 2006 66SL and must say Its great too, even plusher than rc2x. Bit more linear but IMAO rc2x is not worth additional 0,5kg.
I found this review very contradictory to this http://www.rotorburn.com/forums/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=1860513 thread on rotorburn.com where everyone's forks seem to be suffering from a lack of lubrication and seal grease from brand new.
The 1st thing anybody should do when they buy any Rock Shox fork is to drop the lowers and check the oil in the lower legs, as Rock Shox either don't put any in, or if they do, they don't put enough in!!!
If you ride for real, you should learn to take care of your bike. RockShox makes this VERY EASY. Changing the oil and lubing the seals is just as easy as taking out your bottom bracket.
I'm not a member of rotorburn but that thread sounds very similar to one on ridemonkey; it seems like they shipped without enough oil and grease and you need to open it up and put that in before you ride it. I wish they came ready to ride but at least RS has released two very helpful service manuals so that everybody will be able to maintain their fork better than usual.
I'm pretty sure having them on the front of Hills and Peats bike has ensured they have "had the shit tested out of them"
The ones they have will be a totally different fork inside, they may look they same but you can guarantee they will be a totally different fork. They are world cup riders after all...RS arn't gonna want to give their secrets away!
they might be custom valved or more likely have the black box stack setup differently (which you can do with the stock fork) but other than that the fork will be the same.
I would imagine at some point these exact forks will have been on Peaty's/Hill's bikes- as if Rockshox believe they have come up with some forks which are awesome, the pros are going to riding them! The tech inside these is probably Blackbox tech from either last year or a few years ago...
yeah the factory riders had the new forks for most of last season. the way i see it is that if they can sell you the same fork that Peat uses then they will, they're not going to give you a knockoff with different internals in, if the customer found that out then nobody would want to spend over a grand for the fork...
They make money from selling forks, not from racing. Everything the pros ride ends up in our hands sooner rather than later.
I hear these things got shipped with no oil and the shim stack are upside-down??? I would give em a few month to work out quirks or do a service right away. Rockshox can be nice feelin forks, I just wish they payed a bit more attention before they sent stuff out
yup...my buddy had the team. had to flip the shim stack and on top oif that, eventually sent it back due to a knock in the initial travel. might have been a compression damping or seal issue. not sure. i really hate to see these product reviews on pinkbike though. I'm sure most of the 2010 forks are great, but we need some honest reviews, not ones like this where the reviewers seem to be getting soemthing out of the deal.
LEARN TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR FORKS. RockShox makes it easy. All the tech documentation is online. If you're gonna spend big money on a fork, make sure it's ready to go BEFORE slapping on the frame.

I never hear or see that a new fork comes wiht no oil or that you need to take to service first , I really dont think so .
here in Peru if you buy any fork it comes with everithing ok ready to use it . I bought a Boxxer and it came directly from Taiwan and it was ready to ride just came with the oil from 75 kg to 85 kg I think I dont remember exactly but something like that

well, lots of riders do not chekc their stuff before they just slap it on their bikes, or have the knowledge of what to look for or to check. i always check new stuff before mounting it, but i can tell you first hand, i know two people w/ 2010 boxxers, both of whom had issues w/ theirs right out of the box. you should always check your suspension before you ride it- there are always some forks that slip through w/ issues, especially in first run stuff like the new boxxers. im not saying they are bad shocks, i am simply saying people should maintain their bikes and check new forks before they ride them, as i know two people that ride hard and had issues out of the box w/ their boxxers.
brand new tech is always gonna take a few months or years or seasons to work out the kinks.
and even thought hey've been race tested, its a whole new batch coming down to us custy's and privateer racers.
i like to wait, when i can stand it, to have the little things fixed.

def the right way to go max...i never trust OEM or new shit first run through....there's always something. rockshox is still making some of the best forks out there, no doubt, but you're right on the money.
there is a huge amount of forks with no oil, f*cked up seals,... sorry rock shox, that ist not okay!! as said before, we need honest reviews. how can it be that you have to service a brand new fork before riding it?
true man my totems pretty much sucked out the box.. sent them off to tf tune had new samurai seals and a rebuild and they are awesome! but for the price they should be sold as that

No doubt it is a perfect fork and most probably really it is a level higher than any other fork when speaking about the technologies used in it but I think everyone who is buying a new fork for that much money don´t want to waste his money for something what is soooo young and can have so much issues which will occur in the future.

ohhh yeah....we all remember that fiasco...i saw sooo many of those totems come into the shop i work for, we must have sent 10 or so back to RS! and marzocchi isn't any better! the recall this year on the 888's and the 66's was just as bad. IMO, rockshox is still the most well rounded shock company out there, but seeing the issues my buddies had w/ theirs out of the box, it kinda sketched me out.
also, it seems like as more and more manufacturers move production overseas, the more recalls and issues we are seeing. fox seems to be the only company not experiencing major issues, other than the 'modified' 29'er thing a few months ago.

If you want a domestically manufactured product it will probably cost DOUBLE. Either you learn to fix small issues due to the fact that QA/QC in Taiwan sucks, or be prepared to pay more.
I agree with you on the Lyrik. Had bushing play after the first ride. BUT, the beauty of SRAM is the customer service. Got '09 lowers and it has been problem free since. And, I'd like to add, it's been my favorite fork yet. I can just imagine the 2010 Boxxer being the same, but a dual crown 8" version...
yeah, they do have great customer service...again, why i like RS over other manufacturers out there right now. hell, I'm still running a 2002 boxxer. haha. but yeah, my friend who had the totem got the 09 lowers as well, and if his bike hadnt have been stolen, I'm sure they would still be problem free...rockshox also replaced it free. I have had mixed experiences as far as customer service from SRAM, but also from marzochi/tenneco and fox. i guess it all depends on who you talk to in the warranty and or tech departments.
and the 2010 boxxer, as sweet a fork as it is, does have some issues. i know guys who were the first in seattle to get both the team and the world cup, and w/ the exception of one guy, they all had issues out of the box.

Please try to observ carefully the movie, it seams like he's riding a Team and not a WC (the air leg should have the top nobs higher, go to sram page to see what i mean).

And think, wich fork requires more maintainance? Air... More money to the company in maintainance parts...

having ridden with Andrew a few weeks ago, and having watched him put air in his fork i can guarantee you it is in fact an air boxxer. And owning one myself must agree 100% with his review. You want a proper review of a race fork, get it from a racer. the weekend warriors who still can't mount thier tires in the proper direction don't know much about suspension or how to maintain it; but boy do they know how to complain
yeah, drew wouldn't take anything less than the world cups. And that would be hella dishonest to do a review that way, also, Dunbar cycles would have mentioned these issues but we haven't seen it even once yet. In fact I run the boxxer teams.
Ribas you haven't tried an air shock or fork have you? Air suspension is good now, it's not like they have dumbos designing their shocks. Now it is possible to make an air shock feel very very similar to a coil shock.

my 2010 works flawless, no reason to complain and I think that if you're taking care of your equipment it looks like new for quite a while. On the other hand DON'T buy such a fork if you don't plan on maintaining it properly, because every fork will stick and rub and there are cheaper ways to go then.
Great story...but where is the review. I rode it super hard, it was sick...is that a review? If I am going to spend several dollars on gear like the Boxxer, at least give me some details I can sink my teeth into
we all know that the manual is so full of useful meaningful information and represents the best source for real world information regarding how an item performs and how well it works in all situations....great suggestsion

funny thing i rode neds last friday and destroyed my 888 ata WC for the 4th time so now marzocchi italy is sending me a brand new 888 Rc3 WC I WANT A BOXXERRRRRR!

They are showing people the advantages of the technology from boxxer. Not indocternating you to buy it. This is one of the many product reviews that help the bike community make educated decisions about what to buy for your ride. if pinkbike is going downhill then go join the other bike website......
After six weeks of testing, not one thing has gone wrong with these forks!! They are just getting their first service as we speak. Remember that is six weeks of Professional racer abuse, not weekend warrior! Believe me, if the forks shit the bed, it would be in the review!!

The review is in no way a promotional vid for Sram!!!! Our reviews are completely unbiased. If we found a problem with Drew's fork, we would have told you about it in the review!!! He has just done his first service on them after six weeks of extreme abuse. If you have ever ridden that section in the video, you would be alot more impressed!!! We have heard of some of the team models not having enough oil, but htis was a review of the World cup version, nothing else!

I don't understand what you want to hear, Drew gave you his opinion on how it rode, Rob talked about how the fork worked, and I told you to read the manual for any other tech info. so, you don't want an opinion, you don't want to hear how it rides and you don't want tech info. What do you want to hear, should we tell you what YOU think about the product or did you want to hear what someone who uses it (and IS NOT paid to use it) to tell you their opinion?
sorry dunbar, i just read the above info, didn't watch the vid...and although drew did not have a specific issue w/ his world cup, i know a guy who did. that's all i am saying. i will definitely look forward to your later review down the road, but for now, i have to remain a little bit skeptical due to some local pros i know here in seatte and some riding buddies who have had issues w/ theirs.

On the movie it is visible that fork works better than previous models. When U watch NWD 8 you can easily notice that when some of the top guns ride boxxers, the forks go all the way up and down not maintaining the position in the travel and thus not maintaining the bikes ride geometry that well. If you compare it with 2007 marzocchi on the same movie, ridden by CG you can notice that fork keeps some certain position in the travel. I hope that RS improved also the damping feel. All RS forks in the past, comparing to Marzocchis, were just diving, linear as hell and when U hit the landing, they just went down, while MZ were really taking the impact from UR hands. U felt the force being damped. However 08 up Marzocchis - sorry guys but U shot yourselves into your foot... Good Luck RS it looks like a good product and I hope U bring all that technology to Lyriks.
i wish i could that boxxer down neds did it with my 09 888 ata WC and it was good untill i got to the bottem and saw that it was stuck at 6 inches of travel and was stiff as a board. something in the ata side of the fork broke again for the second time and now im waiting on MZ to send me a brand new RC3 WC i want to ride the boxxer to c wut its like
In the six weeks that drew has been punishing those forks, nothing has gone wrong with them! The reason we did the testing on this fork is because we wanted to make sure that they were going to live up to the hype and not let us down like the launch of the Totems. We plan to do another write up on the forks at the end of the season to let you know how they fared. But for now, they are as good or better than they claim to be!

they forgot to talk about the part where most of these forks come with oil amounts so low it wont function right.. or in the case of many no oil at all.
my team came with no oil, when i opend it everything was bone dry and there was no trace of oil.
this killed my seals so i contacted sram to see about them getting me new ones due to there slip up and they told me that it was my fault that there was no oil in my fork from the factory... i guess oil is an optional feature now adays

Could you tell the compression was flat with no oil present ? it has two functions one to lubricate the fork and two to provide a liquid compression but I would have thought they might have stated that in the man maybe it gives the fork a longer shelf life with no oil present.
there was 0 oil in the fork all together. it caused my seals to burn out. now with oil in the fork it leaks like a siv.

Liquid compression??? No, it's lube. The damping fluid is completely separate and your fork oil doesn't compress any appreciable amount.
bottem line there was 0 fluids inside my 2010 boxxer team of any type.. i guess with the rush to get these out the door the started to fall off the quality train and went for the quanity.. has been rebuilt since.. little more labour intensive since the last generation of boxxers but is a far better ride over all
Ah- I was thinking about the old pre 05 boxxers with the open bath. Yes your right, they should be easy enough to do yourself just pull the stantions out of the lowers and regrease them and the bushings with some light grease. Rockshox I am suprised at. I am still on 07's once you get them rightly set up with the lowers well gressed they are so nice to ride.
whats with the 10 variations of whips?? i don't really see how this is a review its just a guy saying how he loves a product. a review breaks down the good and bad telling you why its good and why it isn't. not just I PINNED IT AND IT WAS WICKED!! thats the only thing i really got out of this

It was a little over the top hype IMHO. But sick hype nonetheless! I guess it's just THAT good! Didn't Rob used to have an Irish accent?
I see a lot of 888 these days with oil spurting out of them like crazy at the seals the later ones just dont seem to last
my friend has the boxxer team and the seal were built too tight and they require massive amounts of lube. THey have to be rebuilt often too.
could u tell me how it feels? im thinking about getting it. does it bottom lots? can it take big hits?

One thing I always look for and notice with videos showing front suspension working, is how much the bumps are translating to the riders in relation to the forks compression movement - Every video of Fox forks I've ever watched shows very minimal hand movement in relation to fork compression, every video of Rockshox forks in action always looks like the fork is responding late and only taking the edge off the bump, not absorbing it fully, with the riders arms doing a lot of the bump absorption work...

ok, seems like a promising fork, review definetly seems biased though. What bothers me about rockshox is they lead everyone on like they have ground breaking technology, using stupid acronyms and gimmicks. Everyone buys it. Guess what, the moto guys have had this shit figured out for years, shim stacks, mid valves, oil lock chambers, its all been done. Look at avalanche, these guys got it right. Straight moto technology, no stupid gimmicks, no compromises for mass production, just straight quality.
The song in the first video matches the new hype quite right: "it's like I got a hole in my pocket..."
So we got to buy a WC because that's the fork from Rock Shox that works properly? I think it's an insult for their customers. It's the world upside down; we need a Race and Team that perform and don't have a fifty-fifty chance of working like supposed. We all probably think we are world cup racers, but hey, guess what, we're not. Back in the days i'd used to be stoked on getting a Race... Now I know it's got to be crap because RS sends the message that it is
The advertisement/review says it's great. Well it would be a real ripoff if it would'nt be for that amount of money. I'd say RS did an awsome job if the Race smoked the high end forks of the competition. But they don't. They look great and probably are stuffed with a lot of gimmicks, at the end of the day they dive like a submarine...an '02 Jr. T did two.
RS, please stop putting all the effort in a WC and take it's outers, put a lot of crap in it and selling it as the Race and Team just for having forks for the whole range of the market.

So we got to buy a WC because that's the fork from Rock Shox that works properly? I think it's an insult for their customers. It's the world upside down; we need a Race and Team that perform and don't have a fifty-fifty chance of working like supposed. We all probably think we are world cup racers, but hey, guess what, we're not. Back in the days i'd used to be stoked on getting a Race... Now I know it's got to be crap because RS sends the message that it is
The advertisement/review says it's great. Well it would be a real ripoff if it would'nt be for that amount of money. I'd say RS did an awsome job if the Race smoked the high end forks of the competition. But they don't. They look great and probably are stuffed with a lot of gimmicks, at the end of the day they dive like a submarine...an '02 Jr. T did two.

Has anyone noticed the knock on the 1st part of the stroke on the 2010 rockshox world cup forks,,,,is there anything wrong with this part of the fork or is this normal?????????????
